Discover Amboseli National Park
Amboseli National Park lies in Kajiado County in southern Kenya, close to the Tanzania border and at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro. The protected area covers approximately 392 square kilometres and forms part of a wider cross-border ecosystem. It is celebrated for its elephant population and striking scenery, where wildlife moves across open plains with the mountain rising in the distance.
The park is not simply dry open grassland. Its habitats include savannah plains, acacia woodland, thorn bush, a dry lake basin and marshes or swamps sustained by underground water flowing from the Kilimanjaro area. These wetlands provide important feeding and watering areas for wildlife, creating a remarkable contrast with the surrounding semi-arid landscape.
What makes Amboseli special?
- Large elephant herds: Amboseli is renowned for its elephants, which are often seen moving across the plains or feeding around the wetland areas.
- Mount Kilimanjaro scenery: The park offers one of the most recognisable safari backdrops in Africa, especially when the mountain is clear.
- Wetlands and swamps: Water-rich habitats attract elephants, hippos, buffaloes and a variety of waterbirds.
- Open landscapes: The plains provide expansive views and excellent opportunities for wildlife photography.
- Observation Hill: A well-known viewpoint where visitors can enjoy broad views over the park, its basin and surrounding landscape, subject to the day's itinerary and park regulations.
- Birdlife: Amboseli is an important birding destination, with more than 400 recorded bird species.
Wildlife You May See in Amboseli
Amboseli supports a variety of mammals and birdlife. Sightings vary with the season, weather, time of day and animal movements, but the following are among the wildlife visitors commonly hope to encounter.
Park signature
African Elephants
Amboseli is especially famous for its elephants. Watch family groups move across the plains, feed among the vegetation or gather around wetland habitats. Always give these large animals space and follow your guide's instructions.
Predators
Lions & Cheetahs
Lions and cheetahs inhabit the Amboseli ecosystem. Your guide will scan the open plains and suitable habitats for signs of these predators, although sightings are never guaranteed.
Large mammals
Buffaloes & Giraffes
Buffaloes may be found grazing in open areas and around wetland edges, while giraffes browse on trees and shrubs across parts of the park.
Plains wildlife
Zebras & Antelopes
Look out for plains zebras and antelope species such as wildebeest, gazelles and impalas as they graze and move across the grasslands.
Wetland wildlife
Hippos & Waterbirds
Wetland areas support hippos and a variety of birds. Depending on water levels and season, the Amboseli basin may also attract flamingos and other waterbirds.
Other sightings
Hyenas & Smaller Wildlife
Hyenas, jackals, warthogs, monkeys and other smaller wildlife may also be encountered during the game drive.
Wildlife sightings: Animals roam freely in a natural environment. No particular animal or mountain view can be guaranteed on a specific departure.
Mount Kilimanjaro – The Iconic Amboseli Backdrop
Mount Kilimanjaro is a massive volcanic mountain in northern Tanzania, close to the Kenya–Tanzania border. Rising to approximately 5,895 metres above sea level, it is the highest mountain in Africa. Its snow-capped summit and broad volcanic slopes create the dramatic backdrop that makes many Amboseli safari photographs so recognisable.
Although Kilimanjaro is in Tanzania, its northern slopes are clearly visible from parts of Amboseli on suitable days. Early mornings often offer the best opportunity for a clear view before clouds build around the summit. The mountain may also appear later in the day when weather conditions allow. Visibility depends on cloud cover, haze and weather, so a clear view cannot be promised.
Photography tip: Keep your camera ready during the early game drive. When the mountain is visible, your guide can help identify suitable viewpoints and safe places to pause for photographs without disturbing wildlife.
Observation Hill & Amboseli Wetlands
Observation Hill, also known as Nomatior, is one of the park's recognised viewpoints. The elevated vantage point offers a wide perspective over the Amboseli basin, surrounding plains and wetland habitats. From here, visitors can appreciate how the park's different landscapes fit together and, when conditions are clear, enjoy views towards Mount Kilimanjaro.
The park's swamps and marshes are especially important because they provide water and green vegetation in an otherwise dry environment. Fed by underground water systems linked to the Kilimanjaro area, these wetlands attract elephants, buffaloes, hippos and many bird species. A visit to Observation Hill is subject to the day's available time, route and park regulations.
