About Nairobi National Park

Nairobi National Park offers a remarkable wildlife experience beside a modern capital city. Its open savannah, scattered acacia and riverine habitats provide a home for a variety of wildlife, with Nairobi’s skyline visible in the distance.

What can you see?

Wildlife sightings vary with the season and animal movements, but visitors may encounter lions, rhinos, giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, elands, antelopes, hyenas, warthogs and a rich variety of birdlife. Sightings cannot be guaranteed.

Why visit Nairobi National Park?

  • A safari close to the city: Enjoy a wildlife experience without a long road transfer out of Nairobi.
  • Ideal for stopovers: A practical excursion for visitors with a free morning or a short stay in Kenya.
  • Distinctive photography: Capture African wildlife with Nairobi’s skyline in the background.
  • Flexible options: Choose a shared group-joining departure or arrange a private vehicle.

What to Expect on Your Half-Day Game Drive

Nairobi National Park is a genuine savannah wildlife reserve on the edge of the capital. Your guide follows park roads and checks suitable habitats, water points and recent wildlife activity. The route is adapted to conditions and sightings on the day, so no two game drives are exactly alike.

Morning safari

Early wildlife viewing

Early departures are generally preferred because temperatures are cooler and many animals are active after sunrise. This option also leaves more of the day available for other plans in Nairobi.

Afternoon safari

Later start, evening light

An afternoon drive suits guests with morning commitments or a later arrival. Wildlife activity and visibility vary, but the softer late-day light can be excellent for photography.

Wildlife you may encounter

The park supports a diverse range of wildlife, including black and white rhinos, lions, leopards, cheetahs, giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, elands, antelopes, hyenas, warthogs and ostriches. Hippos and crocodiles may be seen around suitable water habitats. The park is also an important birding destination, with more than 400 recorded bird species.

Big Five note: Four of the Big Five are found in Nairobi National Park—lion, leopard, buffalo and rhino. The park does not have a resident elephant population. Wildlife is free-ranging, so sightings, including sightings of specific species, cannot be guaranteed.

Morning or Afternoon: Choosing Your Game Drive

OptionTypical timing guideBest suited to
MorningEarly pickup, commonly around 5:30–6:00 am; game drive after park entry; return to Nairobi late morningFirst-time visitors, wildlife viewing, photography, families and guests with afternoon plans
AfternoonPickup commonly around 2:00–3:00 pm; game drive through the afternoon; return early eveningGuests with morning meetings, later arrivals or a preference for a relaxed start
Timing clarification: These are planning guides, not guaranteed schedules. Actual pickup, gate entry and return times depend on the chosen option, traffic, park access and the agreed booking. Weekend group-joining departures remain the morning service described in the rates above; the afternoon option is for private bookings.

A Good Option for Nairobi Stopovers and Layovers

A half-day game drive can work well for visitors with a free morning or a longer Nairobi stopover because the park is close to the city and airport corridors. However, a safari should only be planned around a flight when there is enough time for immigration, baggage, road traffic, the game drive and airport check-in.

For a layover enquiry, provide your arrival and departure flight numbers, landing and take-off times, number of travellers, luggage details, pickup point and visitor category for park entry. We can then assess whether the available time is realistic. A short connection should not be treated as sufficient time for a full game drive.

Airport timing: Do not book a safari that risks your onward flight. Allow a generous buffer for Nairobi traffic and airline check-in requirements. Flight-delay arrangements must be agreed before confirmation and are subject to vehicle availability.

Rhino Viewing and Photography

Nairobi National Park is especially valued for its black and white rhino conservation. If rhinos are a priority, mention this when enquiring so the guide can take recent reports and suitable habitats into account. A private vehicle gives your group more flexibility over the pace of the drive and the time spent at sightings.

The park is also known for the striking contrast between wildlife and Nairobi’s skyline. Early morning and late afternoon can provide attractive light, while open grassland, water areas and bird habitats offer varied photographic opportunities. Bring binoculars if you have them, and follow the guide’s instructions about safe viewing distances and vehicle positioning.

Best Time of Year to Visit

Nairobi National Park can be visited throughout the year. Dry periods often make wildlife easier to spot around open areas and water sources, while the rainy seasons bring greener scenery and rewarding birdwatching. Conditions vary from year to year.

PeriodWhat to expect
June–OctoberGenerally drier conditions and good opportunities to scan open habitats for wildlife
January–FebruaryOften a relatively dry period with favourable game-drive conditions
March–MayLong-rains period; greener landscapes, possible muddy sections and good bird activity
November–DecemberShort-rains period and changing conditions; fresh vegetation and birdlife can be rewarding

These are broad seasonal patterns, not guarantees. Weather, road conditions and wildlife movement change, so the best experience depends on the day.

Park Access, Pickup and Route Planning

The Main Gate on Lang’ata Road is a commonly used access point for visitors staying in central Nairobi, Westlands, Kilimani, Upper Hill, Karen, Lang’ata and the airport corridor. The most suitable gate and route can depend on your pickup location, traffic and current park arrangements.

For private bookings, pickup and drop-off can be discussed for a Nairobi hotel or residence, JKIA or Wilson Airport. The exact pickup time and any location-based transfer supplement must be confirmed before payment. The weekend group-joining meeting point and optional hotel pickup remain as stated in the rate section above.

Who Will Enjoy This Safari?

  • First-time visitors: A convenient introduction to Kenya’s wildlife without travelling out of Nairobi.
  • Families: A vehicle-based experience that can be paced around the group. Children should remain safely inside the vehicle during the game drive unless the guide advises otherwise at an authorised stop.
  • Business travellers: A practical excursion for a free morning or afternoon, subject to your schedule.
  • Photographers: A distinctive setting for wildlife images with the city skyline in the background.
  • Birdwatchers: A varied habitat with a substantial recorded bird list; bring binoculars where possible.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a Half-Day Nairobi National Park Tour cost?

Tour costs depend on whether you choose a group-joining or private safari, the vehicle type, pickup arrangements and the number of guests. Refer to the transport rates shown on this page. Park entry fees are listed separately and are excluded from the transport rates unless your written quote specifically states otherwise.

Are Nairobi National Park entry fees included?

No. The transport rates on this page do not include personal park entry fees or applicable gateway charges. The entry-fee guide is shown separately above. Confirm the current fee category and total payable before travel, as official charges may change.

What is the best time for a Nairobi National Park game drive?

Early morning is generally the preferred time because it is cooler and wildlife may be more active. Private bookings can also be arranged for an afternoon drive. Weekend group-joining departures are morning departures only.

Can I visit Nairobi National Park during a layover?

It may be possible if you have sufficient time between flights. Share your flight numbers, arrival and departure times, luggage details and pickup point so the schedule can be assessed. Allow enough time for traffic, airport procedures and check-in; a safari should not put your onward flight at risk.

Will I see lions during the game drive?

Lions live in Nairobi National Park and may be seen during a game drive, but sightings are never guaranteed. Your guide will use current conditions and wildlife movement to plan the drive.

Can I see rhinos in Nairobi National Park?

The park is an important sanctuary for both black and white rhinos and is well known for rhino conservation. Sightings depend on animal movement, habitat and conditions on the day. Mention your interest in rhinos when booking.

Are there elephants in Nairobi National Park?

Nairobi National Park does not have a resident elephant population. The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust Elephant Orphanage is a separate attraction and is not included in this park-only tour.

Is this tour private or shared?

Both formats are available on this page. Saturday and Sunday group-joining departures are shared morning game drives. Private half-day safaris are charged per vehicle and can be arranged for a morning or afternoon departure, subject to availability.

Is the tour suitable for children?

Yes. The game drive is vehicle-based and can suit families. Children must follow the driver-guide’s instructions and remain inside the vehicle during the game drive except at designated safe places where visitors are permitted to get out.

Can I add the Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage or Giraffe Centre?

These attractions are not included in this package. Their visiting arrangements and schedules need separate planning. For a day combining Nairobi National Park, the Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage and Giraffe Centre, view our separate three-experience package.

What vehicle is used?

Vehicle type depends on the option booked and availability. The rates on this page list Tour Van and Land Cruiser options. For private bookings, the vehicle capacity and assigned vehicle should be confirmed before payment. A pop-up roof vehicle is useful for wildlife viewing and photography; confirm the exact vehicle specification when enquiring.

What should I wear?

Wear comfortable clothing, preferably in neutral colours, and bring a light jacket for an early start. Closed shoes, a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen are also useful.

Is Nairobi National Park safe to visit?

The game drive is conducted with a driver-guide inside the national park. Follow the guide and park-ranger instructions, remain inside the vehicle except in designated areas, and never approach or feed wildlife.

How do I book?

Send your preferred date, number of adults and children, children’s ages, pickup and drop-off points, preferred morning or afternoon timing, vehicle preference and nationality or residency category. For airport pickups, include your flight details. We will confirm availability, the final price, inclusions and exclusions before payment.
